Our Story

Company History & Mission

Jen Bush, the founder of Ice Box Bakery, has always loved the way a delicious dessert, made with love from the very best ingredients, can delight people’s spirits and bring them together. A graduate of the San Francisco Culinary Academy, Jen worked as a pastry chef for many years, first in the Bay Area and then in her hometown of Boulder, Colo. Her exquisite cakes, tarts, cookies and confections have enchanted, comforted, and satisfied many happy customers.

After she had her first daughter in 2000, and while she was working as executive pastry chef for Boulder’s Blue Fine Pastries, Jen became increasingly aware of the glut of sweets on the market made with processed dough, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, palm shortening, and hydrogenated fats—and how aggressively these were marketed to children. It was her belief that this growing landscape of low-quality snacks was a major contributor to the rising rates of childhood obesity in the United States. She remembered helping her mother bake homemade cookies when she was little, and how just one or two of those delicious treats, made with real, wholesome ingredients and eaten warm and fresh from the oven, was so completely satisfying. A working mother herself, Jen realized that as much as every caring parent wants to recreate their best childhood memories for their own children, today’s busy schedules don’t often allow time for things like shopping for, measuring, and mixing cookie dough.

So along with the beautiful finished confections she offered for sale in her pastry case at Blue, Jen began making rolled cookie dough, wrapped in parchment paper and ready to bake, and offering it for sale as well. It flew off the shelves—and that’s when she had the idea for Ice Box Bakery.

Founded in Boulder in 2007, Ice Box Bakery all-natural cookie dough is made from scratch in small batches, quick-wrapped to ensure “fresh from the mixing bowl” flavor, and sold ready to slice and bake. Using only premium, all-natural ingredients, including real creamery butter, pure cane sugar, and pure vanilla, Ice Box Bakery cookie dough is available in seven delicious, old fashioned flavors and sold in the refrigerated section at Whole Foods Market and other fine natural and specialty food stores throughout the U.S.

At Ice Box Bakery, we want to bring wholesome sweetness to everyone’s life, in ways both big and small. We work to achieve this mission by not only creating great products for families to enjoy together, but also aligning our company with great causes. Since our founding in 2007, through a commitment to volunteering, contributions, and on-going donations, we have partnered with There With Care (www.therewithcare.org), an organization dedicated to easing the burden of families with critically ill children.
